What are Injuries?
An injury is a broad term used to describe external or internal damage to the body. Every year millions of people worldwide suffer minor or severe injuries.
What Causes Injuries?
These injuries may occur as a result of a variety of factors such as accidents, traffic collisions, falls, playing sport and violence. Injuries and wounds may range from superficial surface cuts, scrapes, bruises and burns to more severe internal sprains and strains, fractures and broken bones or internal injuries which can cause acute swelling and restricted circulation.
Various organs may also suffer small or more severe injuries in a different way – which may not be seen with the naked eye. Very often injuries may cause temporary or in more serious cases, permanent disabilities.
Help for Injuries
Natural and holistic treatments can also provide effective healing and support for all types of injuries. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are gentle and safe enough to use and helps to maintain the body’s natural healing ability. Herbs such as Filipendula almaria (Meadowsweet) and Symphytum officinale (comfrey) contain soothing properties that support bone, cartilage and muscle health. Homeopathic ingredients such as Arnica, Magnesium phosphoricum and Matricaria recutita are excellent for bones, cartilage, nerves and connective tissue and also provide a calming effect on systemic wellbeing.
More Information on Injuries
There are certain measures that can be taken to treat injuries:
- Make sure that you have a fully stocked first aid kit in your home and car in case of an emergency
- Irrespective of how small your injury is, get immediate treatment to decrease your chance of infection
- Control bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with your hand
- Never move an injured person, especially if the person has a spinal cord injury as this could make the injury worse
- Run cold water on minor burns, then apply a cleansing ointment and cover with a clean cotton dressing
- To treat minor sports injuries such as sprains or strains, use the RICE treatment method – rest, ice, compression and elevation
- For cuts and scrapes, clean with warm water and apply anti-bacterial cream
- Treat insect stings by removing the stinger straight out with a clean pair of tweezers, then apply an ice pack to the affected area for at least 15 minutes to decrease swelling followed by an hydrocortisone cream or a mixture of baking soda and water to relieve itching. Watch out for allergic reactions such breathing difficulties, swelling or anxiety.
- If a head injury has been sustained, watch the person closely for possible side effects for the next 24 hours but it would be best to seek medical attention
