ADHD is a condition that affects children and adults alike but it has been extensively studied only among children. Many types of ADHD treatments have been developed over time and they include drugs, behavior therapy, natural medicines for ADHD and also natural remedies for ADHD. It has been clinically proven that a combination of drugs and behavior therapy is the most effective solution to manage this condition. But, there are many other non medical treatments also that have been developed over time and have gained acceptance among the population.
Behavioral therapy, that includes behavior modification techniques, has been extensively studied and has been shown to be the best option for managing ADHD when used in combination with drugs. It uses the concept of rewards (what a person likes) and punishments (what a person dislikes) and by providing or removing these rewards and punishments, it is possible to successfully control the behavior of the ADHD person. It is important to note that the specific module that is used for different people will vary depending on what the individual likes and dislikes are.
Dietary intervention is another line of treatment that has been known to have a positive impact on ADHD symptoms. It is postulated that cognition and behavior are mediated by monoamine neurotransmitters and the food that we eat contains the precursors of these chemicals. Feingold diet has received a lot of attention as a diet plan that helps in improving ADHD condition. Though there are critics of this theory, it does not harm to try out dietary management as a line of treatment since it does not have any side effects. After all, eating healthy hasn’t harmed anyone!
Family therapy and social skill training is also considered beneficial for management of ADHD. It is important to evaluate and address the family dynamics once a family member has been diagnosed with ADHD. It helps the family members to adjust to this new condition and become aware of their role in helping the ADHD person. Many clinical models have been developed for family therapy and these models propose regular sessions for maximum benefit. The counseling of the ADHD individual himself empowers him to deal with his situation in the best possible way.
There are many alternative treatments available, some of which have been evaluated scientifically. Others have gained attention because people have tried these and have reported positive benefits. However, people have shown interest in these alternative treatments because they do not have any side effects. Some of these treatments are visual therapy, Homeopathy, Hypnotherapy, Auditory stimulation and Biofeedback.
