Our knowledge of ADHD has grown manifold in the last few decades. The developments include the areas of ADHD treatmentsand it includes natural medicines for ADHD also.

One of the new phenomenons that is being seen with people across the world is the willingness to try out alternative therapies, for example natural remedies for ADHD and it includes the use of herbs. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the pharmaceutical drugs have a lot of side effects and at the same time, with the advancement in the field of information technology like the Internet, people now have access to different types of information, including the information on herbs that have medicinal benefits. Some of the benefits that the herbs are supposed to provide are that these are completely natural, do not have any withdrawal effects, no side effects and are not addictive.

Valerian (Valerian officinalis) and ginkgo are believed to help to calm the nerves and increase the ability of person to focus. Gotu kola is another herb that has been postulated to benefit people with ADHD. It is supposed to have anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects and at the same time it also helps in improving concentration. Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and kava kava (Piper methysticum) have also been recommended for people with ADHD. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) have also been reported to have beneficial effect. One recent study indicated that American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) in combination with gingko may improve the symptoms of ADHD.

It is prudent to add a word of caution. Most of these herbs have not been evaluated scientifically for the benefits that they are supposed to provide. Hence it is important to use these herbs under the guidance of a professionally qualified herbalist. However, since these are natural, people see no harm in trying them out.
