Sexual activity for humans is performed more for recreation versus procreation. It is an expression of love, a unique form of communication, and a reflection of manhood or womanhood. With the focus more on enjoyment, the time before ejaculation can raise concerns. Primates, supposed to be our cousins, ejaculate in seconds. That makes premature ejaculation a major problem with many men.

It is difficult to evaluate whether one is ejaculating prematurely because there is a vast variation in the conclusions of studies on the subject. Most males would like to be able to control ejaculation for 15 minutes, but the ground reality is far removed from this. An average healthy male under 30 will ejaculate after 1 to 3 minutes of steady vaginal thrusting. Moreover, ejaculation is dependent on a variety of factors.

Younger men tend to ejaculate earlier, sometimes even during foreplay. The level of excitement, a new or an exciting partner, and the time since the last ejaculation all have a direct affect on the time taken to ejaculate. In addition, rapid and active thrusting tends to lead men to the point of no return quickly. Another factor that tends to speed up ejaculation includes the state of mind.

The ejaculatory reflex is much more complex than the superficial nerve endings that most premature ejaculation treatments tend to focus upon. Before looking for any sexual performance products remember that the neurology involved between the end of the penis and the brain is too complex to be solved by topical creams and numbing the end of the penis. If these could control ejaculations, the problem would not exist.

Similarly, medications that have retardation of ejaculation as a side effect or that use the ‘start stop’ method have basic faults in their approach to ejaculation. The very term ‘premature’ tends to give an impression that it is a disease and not a natural response of the sexual organs. Some men may be naturally more sensitive than others.

Ejaculation is more concerned with the mind than only the penis. The Kamasutra is one of the most comprehensive compilations on sex. Although it is often misrepresented, it treats the sexual act as a classic characteristic of humans and an integral part of their daily life. The ancient Ayurvedic texts mention herbs like Himalayan shilajit (purified asphaltum), ashwagandha (withania somnifera), and dhatupaustic churna, a formulation made from at least 16 different herbs that can effectively help in improving sexual prowess by maintaining a healthy balance between mind and body. After all, the biggest organ in a man’s body is not between his legs, but between his ears. If his mind is under control, he will be in a better position to control his natural urge for an early ejaculation.
