The thyroid is the shield shaped endocrine gland located at the front of the neck. It is a double lobed gland that produces hormones such as thyroxin and triiodothyronine that regulate the rate of metabolism and growth. It also regulates the level of functioning of other body-systems.
The human body is a complex system, and all substances required for its efficient functioning are normally produced and utilized in specific quantities. Any imbalance in the levels of production can cause disease or complications to occur.
A diseased thyroid can cause high metabolism which can lead to high production of new cells in the body. Lower metabolism can result in a condition wherein the old cells do not die. Either of these conditions can cause extra cells in the body, resulting in a condition called a tumor.
Scientists do not know the definite cause behind the occurrence of thyroid cancer. With the current set of information available, experts suspect that hereditary or overexposure to radiation may be the likely causes of thyroid cancer.
Early thyroid cancer does not cause any symptoms. But as the cancer grows, some indicative symptoms that can surface are:
- A lump, in the front of the neck near the Adam's apple
- Hoarseness or difficulty in speaking normally
- Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck
- Difficulty in swallowing or breathing
- Constant pain in the throat or neck
Commonly known treatment options for thyroid cancer include radioactive iodine, external radiation and chemotherapy. These conventional therapies attempt to destroy cancerous cells. However, these treatments also run the risk of harming healthy cells in the process.
Even though surgery is an option, it can result in many unwanted conditions. Voice problems, disfigurement of the shoulder, and removal of certain nerves and muscles are some of the problems that can occur. Even as more drug treatments are developed for thyroid cancer, none of them seem to be devoid of side effects. Hormonal treatment of thyroid cancer rarely causes any serious side effects, but many cases of rashes and hair loss have been reported.
Natural thyroid medication takes a holistic approach to the problem and attempts to cure the cause of the cancer. Alternative thyroid treatments for curing thyroid cancer use natural products and have been known to be effective in many cases. These natural treatments are almost devoid of any side effects.
