Emotional impairment causes behavioral problems that interfere with any kind of an experience. Behavioral problems associated with emotional impairment are different from those associated with social maladjustment, cognitive and sensory factors, and health issues.

‘Psychological disorder’ is a blanket term that refers to a wide range of mental illnesses such as mood, thought and emotional disorders. Emotion in common language refers to subjective, behavioral and psychological reactions of an individual to events and objects. Mood is a related concept which refers to a long lasting but less specific and less intense emotional state. Feeling, on the other hand, is a subjective experience of an emotion.

Emotional impairment is characterized by one or more of the following elements:

  • Inability to build and maintain social relationships.
  • Improper behavior under normal circumstances.
  • Prolonged depressive mood.
  • Unexplained inability to learn from experience.
  • Tendency to develop physical illness and fears when facing personal problems.

Emotional impairment is usually disclosed after a child starts going to school. However, the disability should not be exclusively determined because of frequent violations of school codes. Such violations can arise due to general indifference or a tendency to indulge in aggressive behavior. These can easily be managed by understanding and defining specific tolerable limits. Emotionally impaired students may require certain accommodations within reasonable limits.

There is a close link between emotional impairment and bipolar disorder in children and adults. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by alternating episodes of depression and euphoria. In children, it is marked by sexual promiscuity, poor performance in school, addiction and suicide. Psychological disorders are actually invisible disabilities and need to be diagnosed properly. If your child shows any symptoms that raise doubts about his/her emotional health, it is better to get it evaluated by a specialist before blaming the poor child for poor performance.

A lot of research has been done in this area, and there are lots of techniques by which such disabilities can be overcome. You can gather information from various sources like books or the Internet and get the latest information.
