Most diets that are popular these days try and demonstrate how people can lose weight quickly and effortlessly. Most of these diets insist on denial of certain food groups or consumption of a particular food for its assumed properties of promoting weight loss. Certain diets are meant for managing specific diseases and are based on sound medical principles. Most diets however, are created to cash in on a fad and the natural human tendency for a shortcut solution. The fact is that if you want to lose weight permanently, you will need to lose it gradually. Crash diets that promise a fast or natural weight loss.

Weight loss and maintenance depends on how much you eat and what you eat. There are foods that burn more fats than their calorie content and foods that add to weight. Nobody knows that better than farmers who raise pigs. Suing their knowledge about foods that help in losing weight, they avoid feeding fat burning foods to animals that are sold by weight. What they stick to are the foods that add to the weight of the pigs so that they sell well in the market.

The basic idea behind a diet that helps you to lose weight is to restrict fatty and saturated foods. Moderate eating is another key mantra. If you are committed to lose weight naturally, you have to remember that too much of anything is bad for you. Even healthy foods that promote weight loss should be eaten in small portions.

  • Citrus fruits like lemons, grapefruit, and oranges are rich in Vitamin C and high quality antioxidants that help promote overall health and fat burning.
  • Eat salads that contain cellulose rich vegetables and fruits like watermelon, cabbage, asparagus, carrot, apple and beet root. Add tomatoes, capsicum, lettuce, cucumber and boiled lean poultry for taste and flavor. Use fresh yoghurt or lemon for dressing rather than fatty oils or sauces.
  • Instead of munching cookies between meals or after a tiring day, prefer fruits like grapes, oranges and apples.
  • High fiber cereals provide bulk and are low in calories.
  • Yoghurt or fresh curd is an ideal food that ranks among the six best foods of all times. Low in calories, curds are a healthy source of calcium, proteins and vitamins and good for intestinal flora. Add fruit to plain curd and it makes a delicious dessert.
  • Calcium rich foods like dairy (low fat milk and yoghurt and fresh cheese) aid in breaking down fat cells.

Meat and vegetables per se do not make a significant difference to your weight. The way in which they are cooked however, can have an affect on the overall body weight. For example, baked or boiled potatoes with a dash of lime and black pepper sprinkled over them will give you only 97 calories but fried potatoes on the other hand, are very high in calories. Avoid junks foods, cook food lightly in small amounts of unsaturated fats and make sure that there is no overdependence on any one food group. Eat whatever you relish but be aware of what and how much you are eating.
