The Medifast diet has been around for some time now, and is an effective weight loss plan. However, it is not meant for everyone. The weight loss program is a high- performance replacement diet that has various customized diet plans for individuals seeking different levels of weight loss.

The most popular of these diet plans is the 5 and 1 diet plan. The diet includes 5 replacement meals and one regular meal that add up to about 800 to 1000 calories per day. The meal option consists of lean meat, salads and vegetables. This plan claims to provide weight loss of 2 to 5 pounds in a week.

The Medifast diet is different from other natural weight loss remedies that have received attention. It has been researched at the John Hopkins University, where it was proven that those who adopted the Medifast diet achieved significant weight loss. Even though the researches were sponsored by the Medifast company, it can be safely assumed that the results were authentic, since they were conducted by Associate Professor Lawrence Cheskin of Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health.

As part of the publicity campaign for this effective program, various testimonials have also been aired and published across the nation.

The weight loss supplements provided as part of the plan contain the required protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to ensure the overall health of the individual. If you are looking at adopting this plan, you should prepare for a certain amount of muscle loss during the initial phase. Exercise can commence later, and strength training may also be required during the transition phase. The drastic nature of the diet plan necessitates a gradual and slow return to normal food.

There is no doubt that the diet plan is a strict one, and requires you to exercise extreme control. A sudden decrease in the number of calories can induce mild ketosis in some people. Given the extreme nature of this diet, it is sometimes recommended that only people who are medically obese and at a heightened risk of disease should adopt this diet. In fact, a few years ago, this diet was only available through physicians, and has been made available online and through centers only recently.
