Natural Prostate Health

The risk of prostate cancer increases with age. In fact, the incidence of prostate cancer is as high as 25% in men above fifty. There are three main types of prostate disorders:

  • Prostatitis - An inflammation or infection of the prostate gland characterized by pain in the genital region, and irregular urination and (if severe) chills and fever.
  • Benign Prostate Hyperplasia - An enlargement of the gland that puts considerable pressure on the urethra. Such a condition can aggravate the normal urination process.
  • Prostate Cancer - A malignant growth or tumor caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells.

Maintaining prostate health is of prime importance considering the alarming proportions to which a prostate disorder can progress. Managing prostate health in a natural way is recommended since this process does not include drugs and is devoid of any side effects. The natural preventive approach towards prostate health does not require any prostate medications unlike conventional treatments.

The main focus of any natural therapy revolves around diet, herbs and a holistic approach between the mind and body. Techniques like meditation and yoga are part of natural prostate treatment.

The Western diet is loaded with animal proteins. High consumption of red meat, eggs and dairy products that contain synthetic additives leads to an accumulation of toxins in the body. It is now being argued that milk may not be good for prostate health. An excess of calcium inhibits the formation of Vitamin D. This compound is actually instrumental in restricting growth of prostate cancer cells; therefore high levels of calcium can actually be detrimental to prostate health. Consuming fruits is known to be good for the prostate since it contains fructose that stimulates production of Vitamin D.

Most vegetables and fruits have a positive affect on the body. Fruits like watermelon, guava, pink grapefruit, tomatoes and tomato-based natural products contain carotenoids and antioxidants. These antioxidants lower the risk of prostate cancer.

Herbs for inhibiting prostate enlargement have long been popular in Europe. Even though they have a significant amount of scientific support, they cannot be marketed freely in the United States due to restrictive policies. Therefore, most of the herbs that are marketed are masked as dietary supplements so that they pass the strict regulations imposed on remedies and drugs.

Homeopathic therapy is also a totally natural therapy. The discipline prescribes remedies based on a holistic view of the patient, the symptoms and the disease. Homeopathy focuses on targeting the underlying causes and attempts to promote prostate health as well as overall wellbeing.

There are prostate-specific yogic exercises that help in improving overall prostate health. Vajrasana (a yogic posture) combined with a forward bending in that position with closed fists is a standard posture that has been in use for ages. It is said that those who practice this posture regularly are bound to see positive results in prostate health.
