The modern materialistic man seems to have forgotten the basic tenets of spirituality. The use of the word ‘spirituality’ is distinct from ‘religion’.

The basic goal of all religious philosophies is to attain inner calm. Be it Christian, Hindu, Islamic or Buddhist, all scriptures teach methods to attain harmony – harmony of thought and action. If there is peace within, it leads to peace in families, communities and between civilizations. Scriptures contain different philosophies that explain and teach the manner in which the ultimate goal of inner peace and compatibility of thought and action can be achieved.

Grief and pain spare no one. Destiny can strike anytime and change your life forever. Man cries when he comes to life and leaves many in tears when he dies. Besides, many people harbor a mortal fear of death. The roots of fearing death lie not in death per se but in fear of pain, the feeling of anguish that is implicit in death, fear of the unknown, sadness of leaving loved ones and joys that bind us to the world.

Scriptures provide solace and explain the wisdom and kindness of God that is beyond the comprehension of a lay man. These can be extremely comforting when one is grieving a loss. Bible scriptures contain inspirational words, poems and stories that provide relief from emotional pains. The Old Testament, including the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, are a popular resource for providing a soothing balm to those in emotional distress. Within the Bible there are also strong expressions of hope, joy and celebration of life.

The Hindu scripture, Bhagwad Gita, and the Song Divine, explain the mystery of death in words that are comforting as well as a lesson in immortality of the spirit.

"For the soul, there is neither birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain."

In the mad race to the top, we tend to forget that we unless we are internally calm, there is very little that we can achieve. Religious scriptures are teachings that do not necessarily require following a particular religion and its rituals. They are an attempt by enlightened people to explain life’s mystery and how to control your mind. In return, they only demand faith.
