Maybe they won’t stop screaming in the post office. Perhaps they are throwing candy at the grocery cashier. They may have even ripped apart your favorite book or spilled water on your laptop. For children, rules are easily broken, and sometimes this can mean a huge headache for the parents, especially when Sharpie marks color the walls. Children act out for many reasons, but understanding the specifics of their misbehavior is key. Here’s how you can soothe your child into behaving better.

Communication

Have you ever learned another language? Not so easy. Even if so, you had another language to fall back on and with which to ask questions if you needed – but what if you didn’t?  Children are faced with the daunting task of learning their first language – purely through mimicry and association. Surely there will be times when they can’t explain how they are feeling, which may incite frustration and spur temper tantrums. Aconite, a blue flower, serves as an analgesic (pain reliever) and has been shown to reduce agitation in children.

Teething

Depending on the age of your child, they could be teething. Although it is a completely natural process, teething can be very uncomfortable, leading to irritability and fussiness. If you can feel the teeth directly beneath the gums, purchasing a teething ring can help the child get through the process. The Chamomila herb has been shown to help children deal with the pain of teething, and it is also often used for colic (frequent agitated crying).

Trouble Transitioning

Another source of frustration for children is a sudden change in their surroundings, such as moving to a new house or starting school—even changes within the structure of a day. The development of social bonds outside of the home helps them to learn to adapt to new surroundings. Overcoming shyness is a huge obstacle. The aforementioned Aconite and the naturally-occurring mineral Silicea both help children to interact more bravely with others, aiding in socialization and a quicker adaptation to new environments.

Poor Attention Span

Your child may simply be upset because they require more stimulation. They may feel bored or that they need attention, and thus draw it to themselves. This can culminate in an inability to control their impulses, leading to a plate of dinner overturned on the floor. Gotu kola is a commonly used herb that aids in mood stabilization and increases focus.

There is no shortage of parenting advice out there. If your child is toppling toys, take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. If you feel as though your child’s behavior is especially defiant, however, contact your pediatrician. It is possible that it could be a sign of ADHD or another condition. More than likely, however, it is just natural development, and your child is giving you no more grief than you gave your own parents at the same age!
