Fungal infection is a common name for mycosis, an inflammatory condition caused by a fungus. The most common of these is Candidiasis, caused by the yeast-like fungus, Candida albican. Candida transforms into its fungal stage when its growth is not restricted by friendly bacteria that are normally present in abundance in the intestines and mucous membranes. Yeast infections range from superficial infections like thrush and vaginitis to systemic and life threatening diseases.

Although mainstream medicine ignores the hypothesis, exponents of alternative medicine believe that sub-clinical infections caused by yeast are responsible for various diseases like Post Menstrual Syndrome, sexual dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, asthma, fatigue, muscle pain, psoriasis and diseases related to the urinary tract and the digestive system.

Homeopathy is a non-toxic system that uses natural substances to prepare remedies for treatment of diseases. One medicine can provide relief from a wide variety of symptoms. Homeopathic treatment is based on two main principles:

  • The Law of Similars - The substance that causes a disease can be cured by the same substance if prepared as a homeopathic remedy. It can stimulate the body’s own natural curative ability to overcome similar symptoms during an illness.
  • Potentization or Dynamization - A substance to be useful as homeopathic remedy must undergo a series of dilution in water or alcohol and vigrous shaking ( succussion).

The theory of homeopathy is based on the doctrine that the processes of life are not explicable by the laws of physics and chemistry alone and that life is in some part self-determining. As such the homeopathic approach for a Candida cure is primarily focused on providing the body with the deficient elements that cause Candida and yeast infections to enable self healing. This is the reason homeopathy uses the term ‘remedy’ rather than ‘medicine’ for solutions prepared according to its procedures and intended for treatment.

Homeopathic remedies like Borax, Calcarea carbonica, Kali bichromicum, Kreosotum, Natrum muriaticum, Pulsatilla, Sepia and Sulphur are commonly used as yeast infection treatments. However, a homeopath will first make a list of symptoms of the patient and then consult two of the main references used by all homeopaths - The Homeopathic Materia Medicae and Homeopathic Repertory. The first contains an alphabetic list of all remedies with a detail of symptoms they are likely to produce in the undiluted form. The second is a list of symptoms and various remedies associated with them.

Dietary modifications and other natural products form an integral part of any homeopathic Candida treatment. Candida is considered to be a 20th Century lifestyle disease which is caused by pH imbalance in the mouth and the intestines. A homeopath will not hesitate to suggest yoghurt, fish, poultry, meat, vegetables, brown rice, eggs, seeds, nuts, herb teas, beans and lentils as an essential part of the treatment. Yoghurt contains the essential bacterium, acidophilus that combats overgrowth of yeast and restores the pH balance. The rest are wholesome foods suggested for promoting healthy eating habits that strengthen the immune system and enable the body to fight disease.
