What is Kola nut?
The kola nut is a caffeinated nut from the kola tree, an evergreen tree that can grow up to eighty-two feet high and is sometimes called Cola nitida.110 The long, oval leaves are bright green and have a slight sheen. The flowers are white with light-brown edges and dark markings at the center.
The Cola nitida tree is native to West Africa and provides nuts that are used to flavor soft drinks.111,112 Authors have detailed the rich history of the kola nut, noting that this chewable stimulant was popular as far back as the sixteenth century.113,114

Medicinal Uses of Kola nut
The European Medicines Agency indicates that Cola nitida can be used for fatigue and weakness.115
In one study, scientists learned that an extract from Cola nitida nuts could protect the protein, alpha1PI, from inactivation.116 According to the European Respiratory Society, this protein protects human tissue from damage.117 Scientists have linked a deficiency of this protein to lung disease and liver disease.118
