What is Passion flower?

Passion flower was traditionally used in the Americas to help calm, and was later used in Europe for the very same reasons. This plant is native to the southeastern parts of the Americas but is now grown throughout Europe as well.

Passion flower is a sturdy vine with flowers; each flower has 5 white petals and 5 sepals that range in color from magenta to blue. There are also filament-like structures in the plant that fan out across the petals. The passion flower's ripe berry is yellow or purple and shaped like an egg. Although not all of the passion flower's fruit is editable, some are.

Medicinal Uses of Passion flower

Traditionally, passion flower was used as a calming herb for anxiety, seizures, insomnia and hysteria. In modern times it is still used to treat both anxiety and insomnia.

Although it hasn't been scientifically proven, passion flower is believed to lower the activity of some brain cells, making you more relaxed by increasing levels of GABA (a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain.

Passion flower has also proven positively affect sleep. Although it isn't as strong as valerian or kava alone, passion flower is often combined with these herbs to create an effective sleep tonic.
