What are Bloody Stools?

If your pet has bloody stools, it may mean that there is a problem in the upper intestinal tract or stomach. Bloody stools are dark, tarry stools that contain blood.

What Causes Bloody Stools?

Bloody stools often occur as a result of something that does not agree with your dog or cat’s stomach such as spoiled food, table scraps, garbage or road kill. Allergies to certain foods, a change in regular diet, ingesting poisons and toxins or a reaction to drugs may also cause blood-tinged stools.

Other causes of bloody stools include digestive related disorders such as diarrhea, colitis, inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), stomach ulcer, pancreatitis as well as intestinal parasites. In addition, bloody stools may also be associated with, viral, fungal or bacterial infections, liver or kidney failure and cancer.

Bloody stools are not healthy or normal, and it is definitely a cause for concern! Consult your vet immediately if you notice bloody stools. Remember that it is very important to check your pet’s stools for any abnormalities. By feeding your dog or cat a well balanced diet, exercising him regularly, taking him for routine veterinary visits and showering him with lots of love and attention will promote overall health and wellbeing.

Help for Bloody Stools

Natural Remedies

Natural remedies are often a healthier, gentler alternative to treating blood-tinged stools than conventional medications. A combination of herbs and biochemic tissue salts are safe to use and improves the overall health of your animal.

Herbal ingredients such as Psyllium nigram, Avena sativa (Oats) and Aloe ferox have a positive effect on the digestive system and also act as a natural system cleanser. Natrium muriacticum is a biochemic tissue salt that is known for supporting digestive and skin health.

Tips to prevent bloody stools

There are a number of things that you can do to prevent blood in the stools of your pet and these include:

  • Feed your pet high quality commercial food or an all natural diet without additives, preservatives or colorants
  • Encourage your pet to drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and cleanse the body’s system – always make sure that fresh, clean water is available
  • Detox your pet regularly
  • If your pet has bloody stools accompanied with symptoms of diarrhea, give his stomach a rest by withholding food for at least 24 hours and water for 12 hours( unless the weather is very hot – then give small amounts of water often) – this will help to ease an irritated stomach
  • After your pet’s fast, feed him a bland diet of cooked rice with skinless chicken and follow with plain yogurt which contains natural bacterial cultures and soothes the bowel
  • Avoid making any sudden changes to your pet’s diet – introduce new foods gradually by adding it to old food
  • De-worm your pet regularly
  • Keep your pet away from spoilt food and garbage cans
  • Make sure that your pet’s vaccinations are updated
