What is Nausea?

Cats and dogs often experience a bout of nausea when travelling in a moving vehicle, plane or boat. Very often, pets associate the car trip with an unpleasant experience.

Tell tale signs to watch out for include panting, drooling, trembling, swallowing, restlessness, lip-licking, retching, vomiting and anxiety. Behavioral signs that may also be an indication of nausea are anxiety, stress, nervousness or hyperactivity.

What Causes Nausea?

Nausea occurs when your pet’s digestive and nervous systems are unsettled. Perhaps, visiting the vet, a car accident, being left in a hot car, as well as the feelings of movement or confinement may have been too distressing for your pet and as a result brought about nausea.

Help for Nausea

Although most pets do eventually outgrow symptoms of nausea and motion sickness, others may still experience difficulties when travelling. There are various things that you can do to alleviate nausea and ensure that the travel experience is stress free and enjoyable for both you and your pet.

If you are going on a short trip, feed your pet at least two hours before the time. If you are going on longer trips, feed your pet several hours before the time. Exercise or play with your dog or cat before travelling, as this will help them to feel more comfortable before they are confined.

Alternatively, invest in a well-ventilated carrier suitable for travelling which can help them feel more safe and secure. Stop regularly during your trip to give your pet small amounts of water. Your vet may also recommend anti-nausea or anti-anxiety medication.

A combination of herbal ingredients such as Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) and Mentha piperita (Mint) provides support to the digestive system and maintains balance.

Avoid feeding your pet for a few hours before travelling in a moving vehicle
Take newspapers or a waterproof blanket to place on the backseat of your car to prevent soiling
If you intend going on a long journey, remember to make regular stops so that your pet can stretch his legs and drink water
Make sure that the car is well ventilated by opening the window wide enough to let fresh air through
Secure your pet in a crate or make sure that he is fitted with a seat belt at the back of the car
Reduce stress and anxiety in your pet with regular exercise and play
