What is Recovery?
Caring and nursing for your dog or cat is a very important part of the recovery process after an illness or surgery. Recovery is the period of rest and healing, and the body regains strength and energy. It is a gradual process, and depending on the type of illness or injury varies from pet to pet.
During this period your pet will need extra attention, love, tender care and lots of your time and patience. Pets tend to recuperate faster when they are surrounded by their loved ones and in familiar surroundings. Liaising with your vet will be essential especially when medications have to be administered, dressings need to be changed, a special diet fed or you notice any distressing symptoms during recovery.
Your pet will require plenty of rest, sleep and quiet as this will help him to heal faster, restore energy levels and regain his strength. You will notice that your pet exhibits signs of lethargy, weakness, slow movement, pain, and poor appetite.
Make your pet’s environment comfortable by providing extra bedding and pillows for him to rest on. Good nutrition is also vital to speed your pet’s recovery but very often he may not have an appetite and you may have to encourage him to eat.
Your vet will most likely prescribe a highly digestible concentrated diet which contains all the essential vitamins and minerals if your pet experiences loss of appetite. Keep in mind that nursing your pet might not be easy especially if extended care is needed – nursing an animal is like nursing another human being, it is hard work!
Many things have to be taken into consideration such as not leaving the pet alone and being prepared to clean a soiled pet who may not be able to get up to walk to eliminate himself. The best that you can is try to make your pet’s adjustment from hospital to home as comfortable and normal as possible to help him recover.
