Tips for managing stiffness in your pets
  • Elevating your pet’s food and water bowels will help reduce pain or discomfort associated with any neck or back stiffness.
  • Exercise is an essential part of keeping muscles and joints flexible and strong, so make sure your pet gets adequate daily exercise.
  • While exercise is important, make sure your pet doesn’t over-do it. Many pets are eager to please and often can’t resist a game despite the fact that they are in pain. Watch for signs of discomfit and judge how much exercise is good for your pet, and when it starts to cause additional strain.
  • Keep your pet slim and healthy. Obese pets are far more likely to struggle with joint disease than other pets, so aim at keeping your pet at its ideal weight.
  • Provide your pet with a comfortable and accessible bed that provides adequate cushioning of the joints. A foam mattress or large cushion often does the trick.
  • Keep your pet warm. Make sure their bed is in a draft free area and for particularly cold or painful nights; consider putting your pet to bed with a hot water bottle (filled with warm water).
  • Ramps can help ease the pain and discomfort of having to jump. Consider putting ramps in areas where your pet often has to jump up or down to get to.
  • Groom your pet regularly as a stiff pet often cannot reach around to scratch or clean like they used to. This can result in your pet’s coat becoming dirty or matted.
