Cushing’s syndrome is a common occurrence in middle-aged and older dogs. Both Cushing’s syndrome and Cushing’s disease are characterized by the same problem – elevated levels of cortisol in the blood. Cushing’s disease, however, is different from Cushing’s syndrome, in one aspect. While Cushing’s syndrome may refer to high levels of cortisol caused for any reason, Cushing’s disease refers particularly to high level of cortisol caused due to a pituitary problem. The three commonly known causes of Cushing’s syndrome are:

  • Pituitary tumor
  • Adrenal hyperplasia
  • Iatrogenic (drug-induced), especially steroid use

Homeopathy is quickly becoming a preferred alternative to conventional treatments for Cushing’s syndrome, mainly because pharmaceutical drugs create a more complicated problem than the disease itself in many cases. This occurs mainly due to the serious side effects of conventional medication used to cure Cushing’s. Homeopathic remedies, unlike conventional drugs, are devoid of side effects.

Homeopathy is a 200 year old therapy, which is marked by its distinctive feature – ‘like cures like’. This means that a substance in its diluted form cures the same disease that it causes in its concentrated form. Another distinctive feature is presented in the form of its typical method of preparing remedies. Prepared after extreme dilution, homeopathic remedies use only natural substances including plants, herbs, animal matters and minerals.

For example, a homeopathic remedy for Cushing’s disease will be diluted through a process called succussion in a way that the final product would have an infinitesimally small amount of the original substance—and the wondrous part is that it still treats and cures. Perhaps the best aspect of homeopathic remedies is that they ‘bring out’ the disease to eradicate it from its roots, rather than suppressing symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies are actually natural remedies for canine Cushing’s disease. In addition, homeopathic practitioners have a holistic approach to treatment. Dietary changes, which are integral to the treatment of Cushing’s disease in dogs, form an integral part of homeopathic remedies.

Dogs were originally meant to live in the wild and take care of themselves according to what they learned in the evolutionary process. On the contrary, as companion dogs, they depend upon you to take care of them. As dogs grow older, they are prone to develop serious medical disorders due to exposure to environmental and dietary toxins. It makes sense to start early and ensure the dog’s health in a natural way rather than to wait for a disease to occur. Being complacent with the thought that you can fall back on drugs is not an extremely positive way of treating health conditions—whether in pets or in humans.
