Although we may not realize it, red blood cells perform the most important blood duty in our pet’s body. A single drop of blood contains millions of red blood cells that are constantly traveling through your pet’s body delivering oxygen and removing waste. If they weren't, your pet would not be able to survive.

Red blood cells are red only because they contain a protein chemical called hemoglobin that is bright red in color – this protein contains the element Iron, making it an excellent vehicle for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.

As blood passes through the lungs, oxygen molecules attach to the hemoglobin and as the blood passes through the body's tissue, the hemoglobin releases the oxygen into every cell in your pet’s body. The empty hemoglobin molecules then bond with the tissue's carbon dioxide or other waste gases, transporting it away.

In the animal body the spleen acts as a reservoir of red blood cells, but this effect is somewhat limited. In dogs and horses, the spleen isolates large numbers of red blood cells which are dumped into the blood during times of exertion and stress, yielding a higher oxygen transport capacity.

Why is iron absorption important for your pet?

The absorption of iron is important for many reasons, some of which include:

• Oxygen transport – the red blood cell contains hemoglobin, partly made from iron, and accounts for about two-thirds of your pet’s iron supply.
• Myoglobin – a special protein that helps store oxygen in muscle tissue. Myoglobin contains iron and is responsible for the red colour of muscle, helping your pets to move, run and play.
• Enzymes – many enzymes throughout the body contain iron, including those involved in energy production. Enzymes are the catalysts that drive many of the cells’ functions.
• Immune system – proper functioning of the immune system relies, in part, on sufficient iron and oxygen. The immune system helps your pet naturally fight invading germs and organisms and stay healthy.

How can natural remedies help?

How long until I see results?

Improvement should be noted within 5 –10 doses, although this may differ from animal to animal depending on a variety of factors.

What else can I do to help my pet?

• Prevention is better than cure. Monitor your pets carefully and regularly for ticks especially after they have been walking in potentially tick-infested areas such as long grass.
• Toxins and chemicals can have a general weakening effect on your pet's immune system so avoid exposure to them as much as possible. These include pesticides, herbicides, commercial flea collars, flea powder, insecticides and second-hand cigarette smoke. However, in high risk areas, judicious use of a tic and flea control program is advised. Please discuss this with your holistic vet
• The liver is often affected by a weakened immune system. Ask your veterinarian to explain the side effects all medications that are prescribed for your dog. If there is a chance of liver damage then find out if there is an alternative medication or if not, what you can do to minimize the effects of liver damage.
• Ensure your pet is eating a balanced, high quality diet with plenty of raw and unprocessed food (preferably organic). The liver is involved in getting rid of toxins in the body so the less chemical additives and preservatives in your pet's diet, the more his liver's workload decreases.
• Acupressure massage is helpful in improving immune functioning
• Talk to a holistic vet before immunizing your pet and research all your options as over-vaccination may stress the immune system unnecessarily.
