Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species, most commonly known as marijuana, that has been grown and cultivated for thousands of years. Cannabis is believed to be one of the oldest domesticated crops in the world. Hemp was cultivated for foods, oils and textiles, while marijuana was bred for its psychoactive properties and used for medical and religious purposes.
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of a class of compounds called cannabinoids that are found in cannabis plants and in the body. CBD is non-psychoactive, it will not get you, or your pet, high. Current research suggests that CBD can activate the serotonin receptor associated in biological and neurological processes with anxiety, pain, sleep, appetite, nausea and addiction. CBD is also known to bind with a vanilloid receptor known to mediate pain, inflammation and body temperature.
PetAlive® Full-Strength Hemp Extract uses a CO2 extraction process to completely remove the THC. All Native Remedies® Hemp products are third party lab tested so you can be assured of purity.
THC is the cannabinoid credited with the marijuana high. THC is naturally occurring in the hemp plant in levels below 0.3%. If the THC level is above 0.3% the plant is classified as marijuana. Marijuana plants are bred specifically for their THC levels and may contain up to 30% THC.
Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds that occur naturally in the body and in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids found naturally in the body are call endocannabinoids and those found in plants are phytocannabinoids. Over 100 cannabinoids have been identified.
Cannabinoids play an important role in the endocannabinoid system. All animals have an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is also referred to as ECS. The ECS is a collection of cell receptors and molecules located throughout the body - brain, organs, connective tissue, glands and immune cells - with the goal of maintaining homeostasis, or optimal balance.
The endocannabinoid system was discovered in the 1990's by researchers trying to understand the effects of marijuana and THC on the body.
Cannabinoids and their receptors work like a lock and key. The locks are the receptors CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are abundant in the central nervous system - the brain and nerves of the spinal cord. The CB2 receptors are found in immune cells, the gastrointestinal tract and the peripheral nervous system.
Cannabinoid receptors play a significant role in regulating many bodily functions such as:
The keys to these locks, or receptors, are endocannabinoids. They tell your body when to start and stop these processes. Disruption of the system causes disfunction in some or all of the functions above.
The body does produce some endocannabinoids, but they primarily come through food, especially omega-3 fatty acids.
Along with the locks (receptors CB1 and CB2) and keys (endocannabinoids) enzymes play a big role in ECS function. Enzymes are the clean-up crew of the system. They breakdown leftover cannabinoids that haven"t found a receptor to bind with.
Anandamide was the first cannabinoid to be discovered. It works on both the CB1 and CB2 receptors. It is critical for maintain a healthy central nervous system. It is also called the "Bliss" molecule and had a calming effect on the system.
The FAAH enzyme breaks down anandamide and other endocannabinoids. It works quickly on your body's own endocannabinoids. CBD, a cannabinoid found in marijuana and hemp, stops the FAAH enzyme from breaking down anandamide, so it has more of an impact.
Please check your state and local laws before purchase of CBD.

CBD affects each animal differently. Results will vary based on factors such as diet, exercise and overall health. It is recommended to start with the lowest dose and increase slowly as necessary to achieve the desired result. Cannabidiol products affect males and females differently. Females may be more sensitive to cannabis and cannabis products. The normal fluctuation of female hormones may also impact the effect of CBD products.
The body produces endocannabinoids naturally. Diet, stress, lifestyle and your pet's biochemistry can all impact their natural endocannabinoid levels. If your pet has depressed endocannabinoid levels, they will most likely have a favorable experience when consuming CBD. Pets with healthy endocannabinoid levels, may not feel the effects of CBD.
